Who is missing from your church?

Many churches talk about “unreached people groups” who do not have access to the Good News about

God’s love for them, His plan for their lives and his redemptive sacrifice. We pray for God to bring His
word to them, we give to mission organizations with this mission and some even go to minister to
unreached people.

But what if we overlooked an unreached people group in our own neighborhood? In every
neighborhood – urban, rural and everything between. This group has no socioeconomic, cultural or
racial boundaries. It is a group made up of individuals of all ages, male and female alike.

Who makes up this people group? Individuals with disabilities.

When a child or adult has a disability, the entire family is affected. Many churches are not aware of the
challenges faced by these families.

It has been estimated that 90 percent of families affected by disability don’t attend church. But the
corollary is even more troubling: 90 percent of churches see no need for a special needs ministry,
because they don’t presently have anyone with a disability in their congregation.
